The Process

A full sand and refinish typically takes about 7-10 days from start to finish.
– Day 1-3: Prep work and sanding
– Day 4: First coats of sealer
– Day 5-6: Line marking of courts
– Day 7-10: Final coat and curing
This can vary depending on the size and condition of the floor.
Types of finish, oil vs water based, can also effect the time frame
In order to protect your floors there are two standard finish options: oil-based or water-born.
Both improve playability and keep players safe. However there are major differences between the two.
Traditionally, an oil-based finish is used to protect sports floors.
The overall cure time of an oil-based finish is 72 hours after application. Its a economical choice, oil-base finish requires less maintenance due to 45-50% solids. However, oil-based floor finish ambers after a number of years and can have a strong odor.
Water-borne floor finish goes on clear with little to no odor. Recently many facilities are opting for water-borne finish to retain the natural wood appearance with out any discoloration. This eco-friendly floor finish costs twice as much as oil-based and requires maintenance coats, more frequently.

The difference between sanding the floor and refinishing the floor
When a floor is sanded all of the current paint, and finish are removed and all lines and finish will be repainted. Typically, a floor should be sanded every ten years.
When a floor is refinished it is simply screened and tacked then refinished with one or two coats of finish. No existing paint will be removed. This should typically happen at least once a year.
Minimize grit, sand, and dirt on your floors Sweep every day with a dust mop.
Help yourself out by placing wide, absorbent mats at any entrance from the outside.
If any liquid is spilled, make sure it’s cleaned up immediately.
